Curriculum

We offer a top quality education to all our students covering all the essential learning areas. Students are encouraged to achieve personal excellence by both studying subjects in depth and by broadening their knowledge, interest and skills in a wide range of subjects. Our timetable is structured so that students can study subjects at different levels in the same year.

The NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) is the main national qualification for secondary students in New Zealand. Students can gain credits towards NCEA at three levels at Otahuhu College.

Some courses have Achievement Standards as their method of assessment (which include external examinations) and others have Unit Standards as their method of assessment (which are internally assessed). There are other courses that combine both.

There is also an ESOL department which aims to meet the needs of students from Non-English speaking backgrounds by identifying language barriers and giving appropriate English language support to enable academic achievement. These students may be new migrants or students from migrant families born in New Zealand. These students bring a diversity that adds richness to our school's learning environment.

The ESOL department identifies the needs and makes adequate and effective provision for learning for success. The ESOL department offers programmes that build on the students' language skills and provides a bridge enabling students to participate in the mainstream. Students work towards English Unit Standards.

The ESOL department meets the diverse needs of the Non-English speaking background children in the school and ensures that students receive appropriate and adequate support.

UNIFORMS

All students are required to wear correct school uniform and appropriate standards of grooming, neatness and cleanliness are stressed for all. The uniform is available from the College shop.
